Abstract
This study evaluates how Indonesian muzaki judge the appropriateness of using zakat for environmental programmes and prioritise alternative programme designs. A factorial vignette experiment (1,240 analysed participants) and a paired-profile conjoint experiment (1,156 analysed participants) varied beneficiary linkage, spillovers and institutional information. Programmes presented as serving verified asnaf received more favourable legitimacy judgements and were selected more often than community-wide programmes. Contrary to the predicted spillover penalty, the average diffuse-spillover contrast was positive, while the proposed moral-conviction moderation of spillover resistance was unsupported. Fictional Sharia endorsement and independently verified accountability cues were positively associated with programme assessments or selection. The evidence differentiates perceived funding-source legitimacy from relative programme choice and qualifies the application of Sacred Value Protection to beneficiary-related preferences. The treatment labelled beneficiary linkage bundles verification, perceived need and access; hypothetical endorsement is not an actual Sharia determination. The experiments do not measure legal permissibility, realised environmental outcomes or actual zakat allocation.
