Cigarette Advertising Exposure & Adolescent Smoking Behavior at SMKN 5 Makassar: Implications for the Effectiveness of Tobacco Control Policies Cigarette Advertising Exposure & Adolescent Smoking Behavior at SMKN 5 Makassar
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Adolescent smoking remains a significant public health concern. Despite the existence of tobacco control policies, exposure to cigarette advertising particularly through digital media remains high, indicating weaknesses in policy implementation. Aims: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between cigarette advertising exposure and adolescent smoking behavior and to examine its implications for the effectiveness of tobacco control policies among students of SMKN 5 Makassar. Methods: This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 255 students were selected using proportional random sampling techniques. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level. Results: The findings showed that nearly half of the respondents engaged in smoking behavior. Exposure to cigarette advertising was relatively high, particularly through digital media and the physical environment. Bivariate analysis indicated a significant relationship between cigarette advertising exposure and adolescent smoking behavior, where easier access to cigarette advertisements was associated with a higher likelihood of smoking. Conclusion: Cigarette advertising exposure is an important determinant of adolescent smoking behavior and reflects weaknesses in the implementation of tobacco control policies. Strengthening regulations and policy enforcement, particularly in digital media and public spaces, is a strategic step to improve the effectiveness of tobacco control among adolescents.
