Drug Prevention Attitudes as Basis for School Health Promotion Planning at SMPN 10 Makassar

Abstract
Background: Drug abuse among adolescents remains a public health issue with implications for physical, mental, and social health. Schools are strategic settings for preventive interventions, particularly through evidence-based health promotion planning. Aims: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between attitudes toward drug abuse prevention and drug use behavior among students at SMPN 10 Makassar and to identify its implications for school health promotion planning. Methods: This study used a quantitative analytic approach with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 581 students in grades VII and VIII, with 237 respondents selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires measuring attitudes toward drug abuse prevention and drug use behavior. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with Chi-square test (α = 0.05). Results: Most students had good attitudes toward drug abuse prevention (66.2%), while 6.3% reported ever using drugs or prohibited substances. Risk behaviors such as non-prescription tramadol use and mixing medication with soft drinks were also identified. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between attitudes toward drug abuse prevention and drug use behavior (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: Preventive attitudes are significantly associated with lower drug use behavior among adolescents and can serve as an evidence base for school health promotion planning, including strengthening anti-drug education, counseling services, and school health programs.
