Abstract

Religious conversion to Islam entails not only a spiritual transformation but also a process of cultural adaptation. This study examines how Toraja converts who embraced Islam through marriage adjust to new religious practices, negotiate relationships with spouses and extended families, and maintain their social and cultural ties. The research employed a qualitative case-study approach in Lembang Tokesan, South Sangalla District, Tana Toraja. Four purposively selected informants participated in the study, comprising three converts through marriage and one member of an informant’s family. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analysed through data reduction, thematic organization, and triangulation. The findings show that adaptation occurs through changes in worship practices, dietary habits, and participation in the social environment. Spouses and family members play a central role in teaching religious practices and supporting converts during the adjustment process. Converts continue to participate in Toraja ceremonies, particularly funeral rituals, while selectively avoiding practices and foods that conflict with Islamic teachings. The study demonstrates that conversion through marriage does not eliminate Toraja cultural identity; instead, converts negotiate a form of everyday coexistence between their new religious commitments and established cultural relationships.
