The Expression of Love Palestine in the Song "Jerussalem in My Heart" Popularized by Fairuz: A Stylistic Study

Abstract

This study aims to (1) identify the stylistic forms found in ten song lyrics from the album Jerussalem in My Heart popularized by Fairuz, and (2) explain the forms of expression of love for Palestine represented through the lyrics of these songs. This research employs a qualitative research design with a descriptive-analytical method and a stylistic approach. The data collection techniques used were documentation, listening, and note taking techniques. The research data consist of words, phrases, clauses, and verses containing stylistic elements in the Arabic language song lyrics. The data analysis methods and techniques were carried out through the stages of transcription, transliteration, translation, identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that (1) there are 39 stylistic elements comprising diction, symbolism, imagery, figures of speech, rhyme, rhythm, parallelism, and repetition. Repetition emerges as the most dominant element in reinforcing the meanings of longing, hope, and struggle; (2) the expression of love for Palestine in the album consists of eight multidimensional forms of love, namely love as diasporic longing, love as romantic passion, family and homeland ties, religious devotion, collective resolve, active struggle, love as solidarity with suffering, and love as hope across generations. Based on these findings, the album Jerussalem in My Heart constitutes a poetic musical corpus that employs language as both an aesthetic medium and a vehicle for voicing the identity, resistance, and hope for the homecoming of the Palestinian people.
