Abstract

ABSTRACT

Smart Exfarm at the Faculty of Agriculture, Hasanuddin University, has been developed as a vegetable production unit as well as a field-based learning facility for students. Sustainable farm management requires human resources with adequate knowledge and skills in crop cultivation, farm management, and product marketing. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the capacity of Smart Exfarm managers through training and mentoring in vegetable cultivation and production management. The program employed a participatory capacity-building approach consisting of four stages: initial condition assessment, training and hands-on practice, mentoring, and monitoring and evaluation. Participants were Smart Exfarm managers, including members of the Smart Farmers Student Activity Unit and interns from Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture. The program covered hydroponic vegetable cultivation, vegetable cultivation and crop maintenance with particular emphasis on raised-bed systems, as well as farm management and product marketing. Changes in participants’ knowledge were evaluated among 37 participants using pre- and post-tests. The results showed that the mean knowledge score increased from 81.80 to 96.04, representing a 17.40% improvement. The greatest improvement was observed in hydroponic cultivation knowledge (30.66%), followed by farm management and product marketing (21.58%). The mentoring activities also provide participants with hand-on experience in applying raised-bed and hydroponic cultivation technologies, as well as in farm management and product marketing. The capacity-building program improved participants’ knowledge and strengthened practice-based learning in Smart Exfarm management. The sustainability of the program should be supported through standardized production and sales management and periodic mentoring.
