THE PROBLEMS OF INDONESIAN COLLEGE EFL LEARNERS IN LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Abstract

Studi ini mengkaji masalah yang paling potensial dalam menyimak wacana bahasa Inggris yang
dihadapi oleh pembelajar Indonesia yang mempelajaribahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di
tingkat perguruan tinggi. Tes menyimak diberikan pada pembelajar bahasa Inggris yang memiliki
kemampuan menyimak pre-intermediate dan intermediate. Selanjutnya, kuesioner diberikan
untuk mengetahui pikiran, perasaan, atau komentar mengenai aktifitas menyimak selama tes
berlangsung. Akhirnya, wawancara dilakukan untuk mengetahui kemungkinan masalah yang
dialami dalam menyimak serta penyebabnya. Hasil analisis kualitatif data yang dikumpulkan
dari tiga instrumen tersebut menemukan lima kategori masalah pemerolehan pemahaman dalam
menyimak yaitu masalah yang berhubungan dengan pengolahan informasi (masalah kecepatan
pembicara penutur bahasa Inggris), konten bahasa penutur asli '(masalah karena pengucapan
penutur bahasa Inggris yang sulit dipahami, penggunaan bahasa sehari-hari dan penggunaan
bentuk bahasa yang disederhanakan), kemampuan berbahasa Inggris (masalah keterbatasan kosa
kata dan tata bahasa), kebiasaan belajar (masalah karena inkonsistensi kebiasaan belajar
menyimak), gangguan saat menyimak (masalah sulit berkonsentrasi) serta masalah kesalahan interpretasi (masalah karena ketidakmampuan siswa untuk mengkonversi pesan dengan benar
saat menyimak).
