Abstract

The aim of this research is to knowing the comparison of art functions in Bunraku performances with wayang golek by the similarities and differences in art functions. Art functions divided into several types can be identified in Bunraku and wayang golek. This research uses literature study technique and qualitative descriptive method with theories proposed by Soedarsono (2002), Hidayat (2005) and W. Setya (2020) to determine the art functions in Bunraku and wayang golek. Based on the results of this study, it was found that Bunraku and wayang golek have 6 similarities and 5 differences in art functions. It is seen based on the performance, the use of puppets, the aesthetic value and the storyline presented in the performance. This difference can be seen from Bunraku which only functions as a means of ritual and religion, means of entertainment, means of aesthetic presentation and the stories told are also about history in the Heian and Edo periods. Meanwhile, wayang golek has a function that does not exist in Bunraku because wayang golek performances have functions as political propaganda, mass media communication and also community solidarity.
