Abstract

This study examines the use of verbal and nonverbal illocutionary speech acts in the film Silent Love through a pragmatic approach. It aims to identify the forms of verbal and nonverbal illocutionary speech acts and explain how speakers' intentions and pragmatic meanings are conveyed despite the characters' physical limitations in communication. The theoretical framework is based on Searle's Speech Act Theory, Yule's Pragmatics Theory, Knapp and Hall's Nonverbal Communication Theory, and the concept of silence as a complementary perspective. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using observation and note-taking techniques for data collection. The findings reveal that verbal interactions are dominated by assertive speech acts, supported by directive, expressive, and commissive speech acts that contribute to the development of the film's narrative. In the nonverbal domain, the main character's limited verbal communication is effectively replaced by actions, touch, and body gestures that perform assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive functions. Declarative speech acts are absent because no character possesses formal authority. The study concludes that pragmatic meanings are successfully conveyed through the integration of kinesics, haptics, and paralinguistic features, enabling silence to function effectively as a substitute for verbal communication.
