Abstract

Student empowerment through the acclimatization of tissue culture–derived orchids represents a strategic approach that integrates biodiversity conservation efforts with the enhancement of human resource capacity. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of final-year Biology students in acclimatizing two orchid species of high conservation and economic value, namely Coelogyne pandurata and Phalaenopsis gigantea. The program employed a combination of theoretical instruction, demonstrations of acclimatization techniques, hands-on training, and interactive discussions on business opportunities in orchid cultivation. A total of 15 students participated in the program, which was preceded by a pre-test and concluded with a post-test to assess improvements in participants’ understanding. The evaluation results showed a significant increase in post-test scores (85.33%) compared to pre-test scores (58.67%), with an average N-Gain value of 0.65, classified as moderate. In addition, participants were able to independently perform all stages of the acclimatization process, including the removal of plantlets from culture bottles, washing off residual media, planting in sterile substrates, and the covering process. Questionnaire results indicated a high level of participant satisfaction with the materials, methods, and overall benefits of the program. Overall, this community service activity successfully enhanced students’ knowledge and technical skills in the acclimatization of tissue culture–derived orchids, supported the conservation of high-value orchid species, and strengthened students’ capacity in horticulture and bioresource-based entrepreneurial development.
