The Efect of Beluntas Leaf Meal (Pluchea indica Less) Supplementation in the Diet on the Performance of ULU Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus
Abstract
Beluntas leaves contain bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, and essential oils, which have the potential to improve the performance of ULU chickens. This study aimed to determine the effect of beluntas leaf meal supplementation in the feed on the performance of ULU chickens, including feed consumption, drinking water consumption, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio. The study employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and four replications (16 experimental units, each consisting of four birds, totaling 64 birds), namely P0 = control feed; P1 = feed + 3%; P2 = feed + 6%; and P3 = feed + 9% beluntas leaf meal. The results showed that beluntas leaf meal supplementation had a highly significant effect (P<0.01) on feed consumption, with the highest mean recorded in P3 at 3102.88 ± 25.06 g head⁻¹ and the lowest in P0 at 2933.38 ± 82.03 g/head. Drinking water consumption was also significantly affected (P<0.05), with the highest mean in P3 at 7625.69 ± 725.82 ml head⁻¹ and the lowest in P1 at 6345 ± 505.02 ml head⁻¹. Meanwhile, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and mortality rate were not significantly affected (P>0.05). Body weight gain ranged from 1161.13 ± 140.69 to 1275.63 ± 123.40 g head⁻¹, feed conversion ratio ranged from 2.447 ± 0.15 to 2.550 ± 0.26, and no mortality was recorded throughout the study. Based on the research results, the administration of beluntas leaves up to a 9% level did not affect body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, or mortality, but it did affect feed and water intakes.
