Abstract

This study aims to analyze readers’ reception of thematic elements in the manga Koe No Katachi by Ōima Yoshitoki through comments published on online platforms, namely MyAnimeList, Goodreads, and Amazon Japan. The research employs a synchronic literary reception approach to examine how readers interpret the major themes of the work, particularly those related to apology, childhood bullying, mental health, and psychological trauma. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through documentation of reader comments and textual analysis of the manga as a comparative reference. The findings reveal that readers across the three platforms demonstrate diverse horizons of expectations in interpreting the story’s themes. Readers on Amazon Japan tend to emphasize apology and redemption as the narrative’s central core, whereas readers on Goodreads and MyAnimeList more frequently highlight issues of adolescent bullying, trauma, and mental health disorders. These differences in reception indicate that digital spaces function not only as platforms for reader expression but also as sites for the collective construction of meaning regarding popular Japanese literary works. This study thus reaffirms the relevance of reception theory in understanding thematic interpretation within the context of online media environments.
