Wanua for the Bugis-Makassar people means territory. The term Wanua has existed as a geographical concept which means space for the social life of the Bugis-Makassar people long before the state introduced the terms kampung and desa in the regional structure in South Sulawesi. Wanua as a “living space” resembles the German liebensraum concept but does not have an expansive connotation. Wanua creates a psychological bond that contains love, togetherness and willingness to sacrifice between humans and their place of life, as well as with the humans in it (pabbanua).
