Abstract
This empirical study investigates the everyday politics operated by small-scale vendors in Pasar Terong, Makassar City, to maintain their spatial survival and economic livelihoods amidst structural urban vulnerabilities. Drawing upon James C. Scott’s theory of everyday resistance, Michel de Certeau’s tactical practice, and Benedict Kerkvliet’s formulation of everyday politics, this research examines how socio-economically marginalized vendors negotiate against formal urban regulatory pressures and spatial eviction threats. Utilizing a comprehensive mixed-methods research design anchored on a primary census survey of 171 vendor members registered under Persaudaraan Pedagang Pasar Terong (SADAR) union across various market sectors (Sawi, Terong, Kubis, Tangga Selatan, Mentimun, Labu, Kelompok Bugis, Kelompok 17, and Bayam), the findings demonstrate that vendors deploy subtle, non-confrontational strategies. These include establishing moral-historical claims through generational inheritance of trading spaces, formulating humanizing appeal discourses, and strategically using state social protection instruments specifically BPJS Kesehatan and Kartu Indonesia Sehat (KIS) as vital capital preservation shields against severe health shocks.
