Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of cancel culture among Muslims in Indonesia, emphasizing its manifestation on social media and its effects on societal divisions and perceptions of Islam. The research underscores prominent instances, including the Ahok and Tuan Guru Mizan incidents, that demonstrate how cancel culture may engender polarization among conservative, moderate, and liberal Muslim factions, while perpetuating adverse images of Islam as an intolerant faith. This study employs qualitative methodologies and digital ethnography to observe and document the phenomenon of cancel culture via social media's Trending Topic X and Google Trends capabilities. Investigating the intricacies of cancel culture, its ramifications for freedom of expression, and the necessity for a dialogical framework grounded in Islamic principles to address these challenges. This project aims to benefit scholars deeply invested in advancing digital humanities within Islamic studies. This research is critically urgent for establishing the integrity of Indonesian Muslim society.
