Abstract

Semi-mechanical sago processing uses using sago rasping machine to disintegrate pith instead of manual equipment while other stages still use traditional ones.  The objective of this program was to apply semi-mechanical sago processing to the sago farmer in District Masni, Manokwari Regency.  The program consists of several activities i.e. construction of the sago rasping machine, transportation to the partner community location, semi-mechanical sago processing under supervised by the implementing team, semi-mechanical sago processing by the partner independently, monitoring, and evaluation.  The results of this program showed that the application of semi-mechanical sago processing by sago farmers (partner community) was able to increase sago starch production capacity from 382 kg/week to 764 kg/week.  The sago starch is packed using plastic sacs or baskets made of sago leaf called tumang about 20 kg each package. The price of one package (1 tumang) of fresh sago starch was IDR 150,000 and the partner produced 38 tumang/week, therefore partner’s income from sago starch selling was IDR 5,700,000 per week.  Based on the target indicators, it is concluded that this program was successfully on target i.e. partners had already changed their method in sago processing from traditional to semi-mechanical, and production capacity as well as income was increased.
